BACKGROUND

This family evolved from the D10 design by Delemontez in 1949. Construction of a prototype was started, but was shelved when the two-seat D11 was given priority in response to French state financing. The stored D10 wing was then used by Pierre Robin in 1956, mated to a stretched D11 fuselage, to produce a three-seater. This was reworked by Robin and Delemontez as the DR100 for commercial production.

Commercial manufacture was split between CEA at Dijon and SAN at Bernay.

Factory line numbers (Fab No) for CEA production have been added from Factory records with thanks to Joel Thomas.

More recently, plans for amateur-building have been sold by SAB/Avions Jodel at Beaune and Frank Rogers at Bankstown, Australia

DR100 had C-90 engine
DR105 had O-200 engine. Named Ambassadeur
DR1050 detail upgrades to American FAA CAR3 requirements, O-200 engine. Named Ambassadeur by both CEA and SAN
DR1050 detail upgrades in March 1963 by CEA. Named Sicile. SAN mainly continued with the Ambassadeur, though they also built a few as Siciles.
DR1050M as 1050 with Monobloc tailplane and swept fin, built/converted by SAN from April 1964. Named Excellence by SAN

After changing over most production to the Monobloc/swept fin version, square-tail DR1050's continued to be built mainly for the German market because of delays in getting type approval there for the swept-fin versions.

A few square-fin aircraft were rebuilt with Monobloc/swept fin tails in 1964-65. The French Government had a scheme whereby flying clubs were given a large subsidy to buy new French-built aircraft, provided they kept them for three years. Consequently both factories had a stream of 3-4 year-old trade-ins, and the cost of rebuilding to meet demand for the more fashionable swept-fin shape was repaid by enhanced resale value.

There have been several model changes when aircraft have been re-engined, mainly from Potez to O-200.

c/n 01-50, 201-250, 301-350, 401-450, 501-634 were built by CEA (includes two early amateur-built at Dijon)
51-200, 251-300, 351-400, 451-494 were licence-built by SAN
700 onwards were amateur-built from plans sold by SAB or its agents
Frank Rogers plans have separate c/n series
Also a few one-off derivatives.
