NOTES

This list was compiled from French & other registers published over the years by Air Britain and LAAS, the Wrecks & Relics appendices in several AB French registers, Mike Bursell's European Wrecks & Relics of 1989, Air Britain News, Rod Simpson's Airlife's General Aviation, Pascal Brugier's complete French register web-site and Bernard King's and my own personal records. Also more recently checked with the DGAC on-line French register. There are useful references and photos for some of the early prototypes in the book: "Les Prototypes de l'aviation Francais 1945 - 1960" by J-C Fayer.

This web page was originally posted in Jan 2002. It was subsequently updated using extensive data on all models from Roger Braithwaite, and contributions on NC856's from Ken Tilley and Andy Marden, as well as miscellaneous updates from AB news. It now has been updated following a definitive and detailed serialisation in Trait d'Union in 2009. This has resolved several queries and particularly provided fates for many of the earlier cancellations. These articles contain a lot more detail than can be included here, particularly ownership changes.

In July 2020, info was added from the website:
https://www.siv.archives-nationales.culture.gouv.fr/siv/rechercheconsultation/consultation/ir/pdfIR.action?irId=FRAN_IR_057354
which gives an index to BEA accident reports up to Dec 1967.

The lists are confused by several separate production number sequences, starting at 01 or 1 for each model, but then followed by widespread retrospective model amendments due to engine changes. Some earlier model changes were accompanied by assignment of new c/ns, but this was later dropped and model numbers were changed while retaining the same c/n, resulting in some duplication. Also for some models, there is both a c/n 01 prototype and a separate c/n 1 first production aircraft. There are several unresolved queries and conflicting reports about the early prototypes which only operated with F-Wxxx test registrations - any clarification would be welcome.

Because of the amount of data, a separate file has been set up for the NC-856 series.

A primary reason for publishing this list is to provoke feedback. Any additions or corrections would be very welcome. Please e-mail me: dave.wise@btinternet.com.

BACKGROUND

The NC-830, NC-840, NC-850 and NC-860 series was a family of light aircraft produced between 1946 and 1951 by the French nationalised aircraft companies Societe Nationale des Constructions Aeronautiques du Centre and du Nord (SNCAC and SNCAN). The design and initial production was by SNCAC (trading as Aerocentre) at Bourges. SNCAC had financial problems resulting from another project and ceased operating in 7/49. Production of the NC-853 and NC-859 models at Bourges continued under the management of SNCAN, including 100 aircraft ordered by SALS.

The NC-850 family has become commonly referred to as Nords even though the design and early production was by Aerocentre. In later years, several were imported into Britain.

Note that there have been a number of purges by the French DGAC registration authority, particularly in July and December 1971 when several long-since withdrawn-from-use aircraft were formally cancelled from the register.

Models NC-850/851/852

Models NC-850/851/852 were a two-seat shoulder-wing single-fin tail-wheel design, the different model numbers having different engines.

They were designed as entries for a competition in 1947, for a contract to produce training aircraft for use in the flying schools operated by the Service de l'Aviation Legere et Sportive (SALS).

Models NC-853 to 859 (except 856)

The definitive NC-853 model was the NC-851 modified with H-tail. This was the main production. As the result of SALS competition, though taking second place to the Sipa 901, an order was eventually placed for 100 aircraft. In the meantime, production started for direct sales.

SNCAC ceased operation in July 1949, but management of the production was taken over by SNCAN and continued to December 1951.

Suffix S indicated the batch of 100 NC-853 ordered by SALS, and delivered starting in 1950. It was also applied to the last three NC-859 models for use in Cambodia. It continued to apply to NC-854 and NC-858 models subsequently converted from NC-853S's. Note that this does not represent the change-over from Centre to Nord management, which happened a year earlier.

Many were subsequently re-engined with consequent model changes. Models summarised as follows:
NC-853: 80 hp Minie 4DC30.
NC-853G: modified high wing - Gerard Aile Flottante (c/n 66).
NC-854: 65 hp Continental A65.
NC-854SA: Converted for Army evaluation.
NC-855: 75 hp Praga DW.
NC-856: Enlarged 3/4-seat variant listed in separate file
the NC-856 series
NC-857: Not built.
NC-858: 90 hp Continental C90-12F.
NC-859: 105 hp Walter Minor 4-111W (primarily as glider tugs).

Built as Model NC-853

80 hp Minie 4DC30 engine. Following the liquidation of SNCAC in 7/49, production was continued under the management of SNCAN. The type certificate was suspended 7/50 due to problems with the Minie engine, which was resolved in 12/50. Several new NC-853's were stored either unflown or with only test/ferry time on temporary Permits, and without issue of CdN. These were auctioned at Versailles in 6/52 and were re-engined as models 854 or 858 over the next few years.
